SURF LIFESAVING:

 

Surf lifesaving is about having fun, being physically fit, learning teamwork and aquatic safety skills, competing in surf sports, and helping make surfing a safer pastime. Surf Life Saving can offer a range of opportunities which will promote:
• A healthy lifestyle
• A sense of pride
• A sense of responsibility and purpose
• Positive social relationships

Kids usually start surf lifesaving as a Junior Nipper from the age of 7 and progress through the Junior Development Program, reaching milestones and working towards awards relating to Ocean Safety and Surf Lifesaving.  At age 15 kids can work towards being an active Lifeguard or Surf Lifesaver.

The fun of surf life saving starts from when you join as a nipper.

 

If you’re thinking of introducing your child to surf life saving, then nippers is the best place to do it. Nippers is open to children from the age of 7 through to 17 years old.

 

Surf Lifesaving is a lifestyle.  Surf life saving is an amazing activity for growing a child’s confidence, knowledge and skills in the beach environment. Not only will your child have fun and meet new friends they will continue to use their skills, education and experience through adulthood.


 

The Juniors of today are the Future of surf life saving.!


Not only is nippers a fun way for your child to enjoy the beach in a safe environment, it also offers children an educational pathway through the delivery of the Junior Lifeguard Nippers Summer Camp Program and the Junior Lifeguard Junior Development Program. The Summer Camp Program and the ongoing semi-year round Junior Development Program is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach while participating in lessons that will pathway them to becoming a fully rounded participant in both lifesaving and sport.


HOW TO BECOME A JUNIOR NIPPER:

Joining nippers is easy. Space Coast Youth Multi-sports is involved in providing Junior Nipper Programs along the Space Coast, divided up into North, Central and South areas.  North covers Port Canaveral, Cocoa, Rockledge, Suntree, Cocoa Beach and Patrick Airforce Base.  Central covers Melbourne and Palm Bay, South covers Satellite Beach to Sebastian.  The NIPPERS season runs from January to August.  Nippers can participate in local, Regional and National surf lifesaving competitions.  Just get in touch with SCYMS by calling 321-557-2761.  We look forward to seeing you at the beach!

OBJECTIVES OF THE NIPPERS DEVELOPMENT AWARDS:

To provide the best possible lifesaving experience for all juniors with the view to encouraging long-term active participation.

To provide opportunities for juniors to participate in and enjoy lifesaving and competition in an aquatic environment by offering a wide variety of activities suited to the skill and maturation levels of all juniors.

To ensure the juniors are safe on Space Coast beaches through the provision of surf safety education programs.

To develop a team based philosophy encompassing leadership, camaraderie, teamwork, and fun.

To promote social, emotional and physical growth and development in a healthy and safe environment.

NIPPER DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

The content for the Junior Development Program is based around the topics of instruction from the USLA (United States Lifesaving Association, ILS (International Lifesaving Federation), and the RLSS (Royal Lifesaving Society) Training and Surf Sports Coaching Manuals (used to train lifesavers for the Bronze Medallion) as well as a number of other important areas of surf lifesaving Education, Personal Safety and Responsibility.

HOW TO JOIN THE SURF LIFESAVING COMPETITION TEAM:

The sport of surf lifesaving is an exciting and competitive component of surf lifesaving.  Children and adults compete at various events and levels to test their skills on the beach by competing with other surf lifesaving teams and clubs.  Competitions are held at the Local, Regional, National and International level and include a wide variety of events such as:

Competition Lifesaving Events, Beach Sprints, Beach Relays, Beach Flags, Long Distance Beach runs,     Multi-Discipline Events and Relays, Swimming Races and Relays, Rescue Relays, Paddle board Races and Relays and much more!
